What is a Udemy coupon?

A Udemy coupon basically is a discount code that allows you to purchase Udemy courses at a discount. Coupons are issued by Udemy itself during sales and promotions, as well as by instructors individually whenever they wish to promote their courses.

What kind of Udemy coupons are there?

When Udemy itself issues coupons as part of its promotional campaigns, the variety of offers can be pretty wide. Aside from plain discounts, Udemy may offer lower prices on their courses for first-time users of the platform, as well as sometimes even offer courses for free!

As mentioned above, instructors can also create promotional coupons, but the opportunities offered to them are a little bit limited. Instructors are free to create coupons with any discount as long as the discounted price, i.e. the price after the use of the coupon, is no lower than $9.99 or $10, depending on the given course’s currency.

In some countries though, the discounted price may be lower than $9.99/10 in order to “reflect local market conditions.” Nonetheless, given that Udemy courses can cost close to $100 and even more, the $10 is really not that high.

Alternatively, instructors can also create free and full-price coupons for students to use.

The duration of the coupons is decided by the instructors. It may just be a couple of days, or it may be as long as one month.

Of course, after the creation of a coupon, instructors would want to promote it. Udemy only allows certain channels of coupon promotion which you as a course student should know about in order not to get scammed by sly frauds.

Either with Udemy or instructor coupon codes, the coupons can be in the form of a link or a redeemable coupon. With the former, you just need to click on the link shared by Udemy or an instructor, and the coupon discount will apply to the course automatically. With redeemable coupons, you need to enter the coupon code manually.

It should be noted that at the moment, coupons aren’t supported on the Udemy app for Google Play and the App Store. As Udemy explains, that’s because the app uses the payment systems of Google Play and the App Store, where the company appears to have no control. You can only use Udemy coupons via a browser.

What are the promotion channels of Udemy coupons?

The promotion channels of coupons – in other words, ways you as a student could get a coupon yourself – allowed for use by instructors are:

  • Promotional emails for users who’ve never bought a course from the particular instructor.
  • Emails or social media for the existing audience of an instructor.
  • Bonus Lectures.

Udemy doesn’t allow the inclusion of coupon codes in:

  • Educational emails and announcements.
  • Course landing pages.
  • Course material, except for bonus lectures.
  • Direct messages to Udemy students.
  • Course discussions.

Basically, Udemy wants to keep the students’ learning space separate from instructors’ promotional space. The company is probably doing this in order to avoid students thinking that they are being forced into buying Udemy courses.

If you, as a student, see a coupon code in any location forbidden by Udemy, avoid using it. You most likely won’t get into problems yourself since you are in no way responsible for instructors violating Udemy’s guidelines, but you may have some headaches trying to get a refund for a shut-down course.

Plus, if an instructor tries to game the Udemy system, maybe they aren’t a good instructor to work with in the first place.

Where do you get Udemy coupons?

So far, we’ve mentioned three channels of getting Udemy coupons – promotional emails, instructors’ social media, and Bonus Lectures. However, these aren’t the only places you could get Udemy coupons from.

If you just type “Udemy coupons” in Google, you will be presented with an extensive list of websites providing coupons. There, you can find hundreds of discount coupons on a variety of Udemy courses.

Now, the important question is whether you should trust these websites or not. After all, why even go to some third-party websites if there are official channels of receiving coupons?

Should you use third-party websites for Udemy coupons?

Well, there could be a variety of reasons for students to want to use those third-party websites. Some may be complete newbies on Udemy wanting to get onboard quickly, while others might want to access a wider range of discount coupons to use on the platform.

No matter the motivation, there actually is use to this kind of websites since they allow easy access to various coupons.

But should you trust these websites?

In most cases, the answer is going to be yes. Third-party websites may be hunting for coupon codes on the social media of Udemy instructors, so it’s not at all impossible for them to have legit codes. Aside from that, instructors and Udemy itself may be submitting coupon codes to these websites on their own to give a little boost to their promotional campaigns, but we can’t say for sure whether this is true or not.

So when it comes to the question of being legit, there is no doubt that third-party websites can work.

However, we can pinpoint two kinds of websites that you should avoid – those that aren’t updated frequently and those that require money from you to get the code.

The former kind of websites is plain useless since coupon codes are active for a limited time. A website that isn’t frequently updated won’t provide you with anything interesting.

The latter websites are just outright scam. There probably aren’t many such websites out there, but if you are requested to pay money for a coupon, run away from that website like from a fire. A legit website will either show the coupon for you to copy or will redirect you to Udemy for you to choose a course to apply the coupon to.

By the way, if you find a trustworthy coupon website, you may subscribe to their newspaper to get the latest news on Udemy promotion offers.

In the end, the info provided above should allow you to get a good coupon from trustworthy sources. While you don’t have to wait for a coupon or hunt for good websites, discounts can be really handy given that Udemy courses can be quite expensive.

But remember – when looking for Udemy coupons, be careful and stay away from shady websites!
